Connecting Structure and Variation in Sound Change

چکیده

“Structured heterogeneity”, a founding concept of variationist sociolinguistics, puts focus on the ordered social differentiation in language. We extend notion structured heterogeneity to formal phonological structure, i.e., representations based contrasts, with implications for phonetic implementation. Phonology establishes parameters what varies and how. Patterns stability variability respect given feature’s relationship allow us ground analysis framework that makes predictions about potential sound changes: more structure correlates stability; less corresponds variability. However, even though all change requires variability, not leads change. Two case studies illustrate this asymmetry, keeping stability. First, Germanic rhotics (r-sounds) from prehistory present day are minimally specified. They show tremendous but Second, laryngeal contrasts (voicing or aspiration) vary language contact. track accumulation unspecified members pairs type spelled <s> ≠ <z>, etc. This regularity change, situating phonology irregularity phonetics lexicon. Structured involves variation inherent within system various levels representation. Phonological then, is acquiring learning different abstract heterogeneous variable input.

Meaning in flux: Connecting development, variation, and change

Certain referential expressions are used to refer to rather distinct entities in the world depending on the context of use, e.g. Dickens to refer to the author or his work or ham sandwich to refer to the food or the food orderer/eater (as in The ham sandwich wants to pay.). A systematic investigation of the processing of different types of such metonymic expressions registered discrete electrop...

Bias and population structure in the actuation of sound change

Why do human languages change at some times, and not others? We address this longstanding question from a computational perspective, focusing on the case of sound change. Sound change arises from the pronunciation variability ubiquitous in every speech community, but most such variability does not lead to change. Hence, an adequate model must allow for stability as well as change. Existing theo...

Sound change

If new words and lexical usages are the most recognizable aspect of language change, the emergence of novel pronunciation patterns and the existence of distinct accents of the same language are also familiar to casual observers.1 Despite its ubiquity, there is no generally accepted definition of sound change. It certainly includes phonologization, whereby an automatic phonetic property evolves ...

Affect, Sound Symbolism, and Variation

I will show how two preadolescent girls use the quality of /o/ and of the nucleus of /ay/ to index affect. Most particularly, how they use backed and raised occurrences to express what one might generally (and inadequately) call negative affect, and fronted occurrences to express what one might call sweetness and light, or a kind of childhood innocence. It remains to be seen how this kind of va...
